Tony Law: Go Mr Tony Go! Edinburgh Fringe 2011 review

Go Mr Tony Go! It is less a headline and more an enthusiastic shout out of support for a comedian whose approach to comedy is like a marathon runner whose legs suffer from violent mood swings.

Crazed, energetic, exciting, baffling and confusing can all describe the Canadian comic, who, as he says, looks like a 19th Century Polar Explorer.

Law has the exceptional ability to bring you into his world, take the comedy genre by the horns, and play with it like a mould of jelly.

Whether it is changing his whole set to try and catch out his stage technician on a daily basis or adding in whole new parts to his Edinburgh routine out of thin air, he is a genuine Law unto himself.

Most of Law's Edinburgh Fringe 2011 show revolves around just how dangerous he is and this premise allows him to wander though the garden of his imagination with ease, stopping off to ponder the implications of adopting a panda bear prostitute or musing over which Tony took the right path in life.

Not all of his work pays off, but he is always quick to fill any possible dead ends with sheer force of personality, playful tricks and subversive banter and the attempt to dive head first into an unknown realms is what makes him such an attractive proposition. It comes across as half material half improvisation – and Law just about manages to carry without losing his audience.

The only thing that Go Mr Tony Go lacks is one or two signature pieces of material which would allow his show to truly stand out. The well moulded gems such as Sharks vs Bears do not make an appearance, but the overall quality is there. If you like Laws kind of material, this is certainly one for you, and for those who don't know Law's style it is definitely worth indulging in his brand of comedy.

Tony Law is appearing at The Stand, at 12pm noon. For more information visit www.thestand.co.uk
